Why Do I Hear Noises From My Attic?

  • by

Although it is quite common to hear noises from your attic, some noises may be cause for concern.

Rodents, birds, and bats

Firstly, it’s possible that animals like rodents (rats, squirrels, mice, etc.), birds, and even bats are living in your attic. You might hear sounds like scratching, scurrying, and flapping around. This is usually a cause for concern because they can eat away at your wiring and also spread disease. Take care of the issue yourself by sealing holes and setting traps, or call a local handyman.

Temperature fluctuations

Another possibility is that your attic and roof are just undergoing the normal changes associated with temperature fluctuations. This is usually not a cause for concern unless you see signs of roof deterioration.

Poor insulation

Sometimes, it may be that your attic is not well-insulated, causing the sound of rain or wind to be amplified. This may make it seem like there are more noises in your attic than there actually are. Adding insulation would not only deaden sound, but also improve the energy efficiency of your house.

Ventilation system issues

Lastly, it’s possible that there are issues with your HVAC/ventilation system. If the ducts are not properly sealed, air leaks can cause whistling or hissing sounds. Other sounds may be shaking, rattling, humming, and buzzing coming from your furnace or other components. It may be worthwhile to have your system inspected by a professional to ensure proper functioning.
